Elastic Justification: How Unjustifiable Factors Influence Judgments

چکیده
When making judgments, one may encounter not the appearance of a candidate into consideration, even only justifiable factors, i.e., attributes which the judge though she may want to hire the better-looking candithinks that he/she should take into consideration, but date. In this article, we distinguish between two types also unjustifiable factors, i.e., attributes which the of factors: (a) factors that the judge in a given judgment judge wants to take into consideration but knows he/ task believes that he or she should take into considershe should not. It is proposed that the influence of an ation, and (b) factors that the judge wants to take into unjustifiable factor on one’s judgment depends on the consideration but knows that he or she should not. The presence of elasticity (ambiguity) in justifiable factors; former type of factors will be referred to as justifiable the influence will be greater if there is elasticity than

Stretching the Truth: Elastic Justification and Motivated Communication of Uncertain Information
Although both cognitive and motivational factors can influence the communication of uncertain information, most of the work investigating the communication of uncertainty has focused on cognitive factors. In this article, we demonstrate that motivational factors influence the communication of private, uncertain information and we describe the relationship between elasticity (i.e. uncertainty an...
متن کاملDenial of Responsibility and Normative Negation
In this paper I provide some linguistic evidence to the thesis that responsibility judgments are normative. I present an argument from negation, since the negation of descriptive judgments is structurally different from the negation of normative judgments. In particular, the negation of responsibility judgments seem to conform to the pattern of the negation of normative judgments, thus being a ...
متن کاملBiases in social comparative judgments: the role of nonmotivated factors in above-average and comparative-optimism effects.
Biases in social comparative judgments, such as those illustrated by above-average and comparative-optimism effects, are often regarded as products of motivated reasoning (e.g., self-enhancement). These effects, however, can also be produced by information-processing limitations or aspects of judgment processes that are not necessarily biased by motivational factors. In this article, the author...

ion model made more accurate judgments than participants classified to the exemplar model, whereas in justification, participants classified to the exemplar model were more accurate than participants classified to the cue abstraction model, FStrategy x Cond(1, 103) = 7.37, p = 0.008, η2 < 0.05. However, a corresponding BF analysis provided little support for this finding, BFStrategy x Cond,0 = ...
متن کاملInfluences of Form and Function on Spatial Relations ESTABLISHING FUNCTIONAL AND GEOMETRIC INFLUENCES ON PROJECTIVE PREPOSITIONS IN SWEDISH
The present work is concerned with projective prepositions, which express the relation between two objects by referring to a direction in three-dimensional space. The projective prepositions have been regarded as expressing simple schematic relations of a geometric nature. A theory of the apprehension of projective relations can account for their meanings when they express strictly geometric re...
